Montargano

Together with Puntalazzo, it is the hamlet of the Municipality at the highest altitude. It is located at an elevation of 650 meters, along the road connecting Puntalazzo to Presa. The earliest records date back to 430 AD, the year of the donation of the large estate (latifundium) called ‘Argano’ by the noble Crescenzio to the Church of Rome. The highest part of this territory takes the name of Montargano, a current hamlet of Mascali. In a document from the parish of Puntalazzo, dating back to 1851, the toponym Monte Gargano appears, and this has led to explaining the place name by hypothesizing a connection between the local cult of Saint Michael the Archangel, to whom the small church of the town is dedicated, and Monte Gargano, in Puglia, where Saint Michael appeared.
