Church of the Nunziatella

The Church of Santa Maria Annunziata—also known as the “Nunziatella”—houses a heritage of extraordinary historical and artistic value. Inside, visitors can admire fine Byzantine-era frescoes, most notably a rare and evocative depiction of Christ Pantocrator.

Yet, the Nunziatella holds an even more precious surprise for visitors. Tucked away in the adjacent garden—almost like a hidden treasure—lies an ancient structure that retains the characteristics of a Christian basilica: an apse and three naves, features that lead historians to date its construction to between the 5th and 6th centuries.

The remains preserved in the central nave are particularly striking; here, sections of extraordinarily beautiful polychrome mosaics emerge, adorned with elegant depictions of birds and marine-themed motifs.

It is a fascinating place where art, history, and archaeology intertwine, offering visitors the thrill of discovering—step by step—a little-known chapter of Christian and Byzantine heritage.
