Santa Venera and Porto Salvo

SANTA VENERA It is another small hilly hamlet of Mascali, located on the provincial road connecting Mascali to Piedimonte. The small village dates back to the late 19th century. The original settlement was inhabited by agricultural laborers, who settled in the area when, following the wine crisis caused by phylloxera, the land cultivated with vineyards was converted into citrus groves. This first residential nucleus took its name from the ancient fief of Santa Venera annexed to the Basilian priory, mentioned in a document from 1211. The Church of Santa Venera Alta, dedicated to the Saint, also dates back to the nineteenth century.

PORTO SALVO It is a small village located in a hilly area, on the Nunziata-Piedimonte road. The toponym could mean a place where one is exempt from seigniorial burdens, in reference to the franchises granted to those who settled there between the 16th and 17th centuries. The village of Porto Salvo is believed to date back to this period. However, it cannot be excluded that it is a hagiotoponym (a place name derived from a sacred figure), linked to the cult of the Madonna di Porto Salvo, protector of sites exposed to the raids of Turkish pirates, depicted in a shrine present in the area.
